Raspberry Pi
In my setup I’ve got two Raspberry Pi’s, two Synology NAS’s and two external USB SSD drives. The most used and important use cases involve the two pi’s with one of the drives connected to one of those two pi’s.
Network Pi
Hardware
- Raspberry Pi 5 + Active Cooler (Raspberry Pi) + original power supply
- M.2 HAT+ (Raspberry Pi) + M.2 NVMe SSD 128 GB
- NVME-housing, M.2 NVME SSD-behuizing USB 3.2 > for emergency if the RPi won’t boot anymore and SD is not reachable as boot…. happened. So I needed this hardware to connect the SSD to my Mac to format/install Raspi OS/search for the fstab file.
- Geekworm Case (suitable for HAT+)
Software / applications / services
- Ubiquity UniFi Controller – Network Manager
- UFW – FireWall

NAS
Main NAS
- Synology DS 224+ – DSM 7.2
- Additional 4 GB RAM memory DDR4 2666 MHz CL19
- One 4 TB HDD drive (Seagate Ironwolf NAS disk)
Backup NAS
- Synology DS 710+ – DSM 5.2 (see note below)
- One 2 TB HDD drive
DSM 5.2 is not a download at Synology anymore, but please find reference here: reddit.com
The latest version for a DS710+ is DSM 5.2-5967 Update 9. If your DS710+ is using a version earlier than DSM 5.2 you need to update the original 5.2 version first: web.archive.org
Then update to DSM 5.2-5967 Update 9 web.archive.org
